The Largest river Island in India situated in the North-Eastern state of Assam which was used to be the Largest Island in the world but arguably still the largest inhabited river island…

The Nomination of including Majuli in the UNESCO World Heritage Site definitely makes it one of the destinations to visit when you are on a trip to North East India..

A land of Vaishnavite culture and situated on the middle of the river Brahmaputra,Majuli has been the Cultural Capital and the cradle of Assamese civilization for the past five hundred years. Home to 22 Satras and the principal seat of Vaishnavite faith, culture and practice. The Satras are Vaishnava monasteries established in the 16th century by the saint and cultural reformer Srimanta Sankaradeva and his disciple IVIadhab Deva.

A total area 500 sq.km which is in continuous shrinkage due to erosion and the increase of river surrounding but that does not prevent it of the fact of being a site of Historical Importance for Assam dated back to 16th Century.

How To Reach:-Majuli is around 20 kms from Jorhat City, can be reached bus to taxi to Namiti Steamer Ghat from where ferry services ply to the island. The journey takes about 3 hours.

Jorhat City can be reached form Guwahati,the capital city of Assam by Train, Bus or Air.By road the diatsnce is about 300 km and it takes around 6-7 hours,there is direct train services from Guwahati to Jorhat and regular Air Services ply for Guwahati to Jorhat..But those making a trip to Majuli,I insist them to take the Road to adore the nature on the way to Majuli…

What to See:-Though there is lot more to see and enjoy in entire North-East India but to a enjoy relaxing and peaceful vacation for few days and adoring the Assamese Culture this place is very recommended. You can experience the lifestyle of the local tribes there. Mishing, Assamese and Deuri are the local inhabitants of this place. They are helpful and charming.

The Satras are a delight to watch build in the ancestral period. Some of the main Satras¬†to watch are The Vaishnava Satras founded by Sankardeva,Dakhinpat Satra,Garamurh Satra,Kamalabari Satra,Shamaguri Satra.These satras are also the treasure-house of “Borgeet” Matiakhara, Satriya Dances.Tourist can also have a view of the Mask, a type of Handicraft the people of Majuli prepare in Shamuguri Satra that is famous all over India.

Apart from these Majuli being an Island is also famous for it flora and fauna, The southern part of the Island is world’s largest riverine Island so it is bird lovers paradise,Between November and March is the best time to visit the Island.The Southwest, The Southeast and The Northern Part of Majuli Island provide a perfect spot for Bird Watching.

For enjoying the Majuli Culture,one can experience it through the festival being celebrated at Majuli.Some of them are The Ali-ai-ligang festival in Feb-March, Paal Naam festival at the end of Winter, In time of Raasleela many people come to visit Garamur Satra. The colorful festival and depiction of Lord Krishna’s life make it a nice event there. These colorful festivals leave tourist spellbound and they get a chance to mix with the Traditions and Cultures of the Locals…

Part II:- Assam Tourist Places

My Previous Post described about the NE’s largest city and in this post I will try to bring up the other places of interest in rest of Assam. So,Let’s move out of Guwahati now and roam to other exquisite places of Assam.For nature lovers Assam and the entire NE has lot more to offer than one could ever think of.There is lots of Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks and each one of them is very well connected with Guwahati¬†and Assam Forest Department provide all sorts of facilities and recreational activities Here is the list of the must visit Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks:-

  • Kaziranga National Park-Famous for one-horned rhino and also famous for Bengal Tiger with home to Elephants,Swamp Deer,is at a distance of 280 kms from Guwahati and takes about 6-7 hours.Jeep and Elephant Safaris are provided for tourist.

  • Manas Wildlife Sanctuary:-An UNESCO world heritage site famous for Project Tiger reserve,Elephant reserve and Biosphere reserve.The park is known for its rare and endangered endemic wildlife such as the¬†Assam Roofed Turtle,¬†Hispid Hare,¬†Golden Langur,¬†Pygmy Hog¬†and Indian Rhino. Manas is famous for its population of the Wild water buffalo.Tourist interest includes¬†Elephant Rides,Jeep Jungle Safari,Manas Nature Trails And Treks,River Rafting,Bird Watching.Distance from Guwahati is around 180 kms and generally takes around 4-5 hours.

  • Pobitora National Park:-¬†It is popular for Deers and Rhinos. Situated in the famous Magical village of Mayong in the Marigaon¬†district of Assam in India.It has a dense population of The Great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros and also famous for Migratory birds.It is around 60 kms away from Guwahati and takes about 1.5 hours.

  • Majuli:-The largest river island in Assam with around 500 sq.kms of area.There are many Satras(Socio-religious institutions) defining traditions of Assam and Cultural entity of the tribes,rare species of migratory birds.Majuli is around 490 kms away from Guwahati,to reach Majuli one has to goto Jorhat which is 310 kms away and from there use the inland transport system to reach Majuli.It takes about 8 hours to reach Majuli from Guwahati.

  • Haflong Hill:-¬†This hill station is very popular among tourists as it is one of the most scenic destinations in the North Eastern part of India. This hill station is located a small distance away from¬†Silchar, and can easily be reached.It is around 310 kms away fro m Guwahati and takes about 6 hours to reach.

  • Sivasagar:-The ocean of lord Shiva formerly known as Rangpur¬†was the capital of the¬†Ahom Kingdom¬†from 1699 to 1788.This town’s main feature is the water body from which it gets its name.This is a 257-acre (1.04 sq.km) tank also called Borpukhuri¬†dug by Ahom King,at a higher elevation than the rest of the town,with three temples(“Doul”s inAssamese) on its banks.Its Monuments like Talatal Ghar,Kareng Ghar,Rong Ghar,Siva Doul,Vishnu Doul are of main tourist attractions.It is around 370 kms from guwahati and takes about 7-8 hours to reach.
