The most exciting sports extravaganza of South-Asian Countries kind of South-Asian Olympics,is on the way and this time it landed on none other than the Northeast India.The event scheduled to begin from 5th Feb to 16th Feb’2016  with 8 countries,23 events and 2700 athletes and will be hosted jointly by Guwahati and Shillong,the state capital city of Assam and Meghalaya respectively.Out of these 23 events,16 will be held in Guwahati and 7 at Shillong.
Certainly a great boost to Northeast India,as this step will ensure NE India’s space in International arena..And we the Northeastern will be able to showcase our Culture,tradition and heritage to the entire world..The Opening Ceremony is scheduled to be held on 5th Feb at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium,Guwahati and on 6th Feb at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium,Shillong.

For the third time SA Games are being organized in India,earlier being in Kolkata(1987) and Chennai(1997) and starting 5th Feb onwards for 10 days it will be the colorful mixture of Sports,Tradition,Culture and much more…and these 10 days will go down in history a some of the most cherished moments for NE India and its people.. -)

The Mascot is known as “Tikhor”-A Baby Rhino symbolizing the pride of Assam,he is sharp,naughty,playful,modern and energetic and  carries the message of Peace, Progress, and Prosperity in the South Asian region.

And the motto of 12th South Asian Games is “Play for Peace,Progress and Prosperity

Visit North East India-My Other Blog

The reason I started blogging was because I wanted to put some lights on North East India Tourism,from time to time I have written about NE India in this blog but I felt I was not doing enough as this blog is almost about everything I feel like Blogging… 😀

North East India-Mizoram

It’s been a long time and I am still in Meghalaya.So in this  post lets get out of Meghalaya and look for other visual treat in Mizoram,another NE state know as the land of rolling hills, valleys, rivers and lakes.

Mizoram has lot more to offer for the nature lovers,the land of hill people(Mizo People).The Capital City of Mizoram is Aizawl and the main important centre in Mizoram.The Official language is Mizo but English and Hindi is also widely spoken.Mizoram a well connected by Rail,Roads and Air.It is at a distance of around 490ms from Guwahati and 390kms from Shillong.

There is a lot more to see in MIzoram rather than describing them in words though I will cover the important tourist places of MIzoram,it is not limited to only the ones covered in the post.So lets visit Mizoram.

1.Aizawl:-The capital city of Mizoram,situated at about 1132 meters above sea level. It is a beautiful and bustling 112 years old city set on ridges of steep hills.At an altitude of 4,000 ft above sea level,the highlighting characteristics of the region is timber houses positioned between profusion of flowers.
The Main attractions in Aizawl includes the State Museum on Mcdonald Hill known as Zarkawt,Bara Bazar the main shopping center of Aizawl in Dawrpui Veng locality,Reiek a tourist resort,Durtlang Hills,Hmuifang a mountain,Berawtlang Tourist Complex,Baktawng Village,

2.Tam Dil:-Situated at a distance of 85 kms from Aizawl,it is a tranquil lake. Choose to pedal a boat through the placid waters or just relax. The nearby jungle has a plethora of flora and fauna.This is also a fish farm and serves as a picnic spot.

3.Champhai:- Champhai,a bustling commercial town at the Indo-Myanmar border,is a beautiful place that offers plenty to tourist attraction.Storehouse of of ancient relics, monuments and memorials connected with legends and folklores this town is situated at a distance of about 192  kms from Aizawl also known as ‘Fruit and Rice  Bowl Of Mizoram’ because of the enormous production of Rice and Grapes and the town has many Vineyards,Orchids,Rice fields etc

Places to see in Champhai are Murlen National Park,Rih Dil a heart shaped lake,Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary,Palak Wildlife Sanctuary,Lamsial Puk a cave,Mizo Hlakungpui Mual,Thasiama Seno Neihna.

4.Lwangtlai:-It comprises of mainly hilly region. However, in the western side of the district there are dense forests.The place has splendid natural beauty in form of exotic landscapes of lush green hills stretching away to the horizon. The important places of interest include:Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary,Blue Mountain-It is the highest mountain peak in Mizoram. It is a highly revered peak,Phawngpui.

5.Sibuta Lung:-Sibuta Lung is a memorial stone found at Tachhip village, 20 Km from Aizawl town. Sibuta Lung was raised by a Palian chief about 300 years ago. The memorial Sibuta Lung offer a story of jilted love and lust for revenge.

6.Thenzawl:-A census town located in the middle of Mizoram,important for Mizo Traditional handloom Industry and a beautiful town located 45 kms from Aizawl.The main attractions here are Vantawng Falls-13th Highest fall in India,Chawngchilhi Puk,Tuirihiaua waterfall,Thenzawl Deer Park.

7.Lunglei:-The second largest town after Aizawl located 165 kms from Aizawl.It is also know a ‘bridge of Rock’ because of the bridge like rock found in the riverine area around Nghasih – a small tributary of the river Tlawng.Places to visit here includes Zobawk Sports Academy,Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary,Saikuti Hall,Kawmzawl Park,Thuamluaia Mual.

Best time to visit Mizoram is between October to March and the climate is mild, comfortable in summer and never freezing during winter,So you can enjoy Mizoram throughout the year.And when you are in Mizoram do give Zawlaidi,a Mizo Wine a try.

The Best way to get Mizoram is by Road from Guwahati or Shillong as the journey will let you through many exhilarating sceneries.It is also well connected by Rail and Airways also with being the nearest Railways Station in Silchar,Assam and from there it takes about 6-7 hours to Aizawl and Lunglei has an Airport,which is well connected with Kolkata and Guwahati.

As for permit requirement to visit Mizoram,Indian tourists need an Inner Line Permit. This is available from any Mizoram House.It’s also available at Lenpui Airport,for tourists arriving by flight.For Foreign Tourist a Restricted Area Permit (RAP),and must travel in groups of four or more people,or a married couple.They’ll only be allowed to stay for 10 days,and visit limited areas.It’s best to get the RAP from Delhi Mizoram House (Circular Road,Chankyapuri,New Delhi.Ph: +91 11 3016408. +91 11 6440954).

North East India-Meghalaya

It’s time for Meghalaya tour.Meghalaya is another tourist destination in NE India and it borders with Assam and Bangladesh.

It is famous for its forested areas,about two-third of Meghalaya is forested and famous for hill stations,Cherrapunji and Mawsynram as the most wettest place on earth.The Capital city of Meghalaya is Shillong also known as the ‘Scotland of East India’ and is also the main city here.Shillong is at distance of about 100 Kms from Guwahati and hardly takes 2 hours to reach.

So without wasting much time let me provide the details of place in Meghalaya that is worth visiting.

  1. Shillong Golf Course:-It is one of the largest golf courses in Asia at an altitude of around 5200 ft.It is sometimes equated with “Glen-eagle Course” in the United States because of its beauty and unique location,hence it’s called the “Gleneagles of the East. It enjoys the rare distinction of being one of the few natural golf courses in Asia.Not only is the Shillong golf course scenic and enjoyable, it is also challenging.

  2. Shillong Peak:-A picnic spot,10 km from the city,1965 m above sea level, offers a panoramic view of the scenic countryside and is the highest point in the state.One of the most visited site of the hill station,this peak provides breathtaking views of the Shillong City and Himalayan ranges.

  3. Shillong Police Bazar:-Major commercial hub of the city and the main bus stand is located here,anyone travelling to Shillong will first land here and from hereon they will be on their way to various tourist destination in and around the city or Meghalaya.

  4. Don Bosco Museum:-It is a museum in Shillong that has a repository of information on entire North-Eastern state.The Museum allows visitor to have an overview of North-East India.Museum timing is from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and the entry fees is around INR100.

  5. The Wards Lake:-It is an artificial lake located at the heart of the city has it’s own charm. It is extremely popular for its garden walks and boating.The lake is chock-full of fish it’s a common sight to see tourists feeding fish from the bridge.The lake is encircled by a winding walkway and is inter spread with gently sloping flowerbeds and innovative illumination,edged in by luxuriant greens.

Umiam Lake:-Also known as Barapani(Big Water) is a scenic place that renders a breathtaking view is located in the hills around 15 km to the North of Shillong.It is popular destination for water sport and adventure facilities.Tourists visit this spot for kayaking,water cycling,scooting and boating.

Sweet Falls:-It is the most beautiful of all the waterfalls in Shillong.It lies about 5 km from the Happy Valley and is about 96 m in height.Located at a distance of about eight kilometre from Shillong,the waterfall is a famous picnic spot for the locals as well as tourists.The beauty of the waterfall along with gargling sound of the water, bird chirps and rich flora are the highlights of this fall.

  8. Elephant Falls:-Located near Upper Shillong and about 12 km from Shillong,these are beautiful sights especially in the rainy season and are favorite picnic spots among the locals and tourist. Beyond the Elephant Falls,one can also view the Upper and Lower Elysium Falls.

  9. Bishop Falls and Beadon Falls:-They about 2 km from Bara Bazaar,Shillong.There is a hydroelectric powerhouse at the base of the falls.The Bishop Falls is also nearby and together they mingle and flow into the Umiam River.The Bishop’s fall is often referred to as twin brother of Beadon fall.

Spread Eagle Falls or Sati Falls:-Located in the East Khasi Hills Dist. and is about 6 km from the city and about 3 km the Polo Ground.The Spread Eagle Falls or the Sati Falls are considered to be the widest fall in entire Shillong.This fall is also known as Sati Falls and Urkaliar or the falls into which Ka Liar slipped.Tourists visit this calm and serene place to enjoy the sparkling waterfall,which looks like an eagle with wings spread out. Thus,it is named as Spread Eagle Falls.
  11. Crinoline Falls:-The Crinoline Falls is about 12–13 m in height and lies to the west of the Survey of India Office.There is a swimming pool at the base of the falls.
  12. Lady Hydari Park:-It encompasses a wide variety of local flowering plants and orchids,and is landscaped in Japanese style.Sprawling over an area of more than a kilometre,the park also features a mini zoo that comprises 73 species of birds,140 of reptiles and other mammals. Besides,the park also houses a deer abode within it.The best grown blossoms,roses and red rose beds of various colours are the highlights of the park.

  13. Shillong Cathedral:-One of the most ancient churches region.The largest church of the province,known as Cathedral Church of Mary Help of Christian.Heritage monument,known for its beautiful architecture,is a worship place of over 3,00,000 strong catholic in the Khasi and Jaintia region.

Cherrapunji and Mawsynram:-Wettest place in the world,located on the southern slopes of the Khasi Hills.Cherrapunji is located at the northern end of a deep valley running from the south to the north,Mawsynram is at the top of the hill in the middle of the valley.Located at a distance of around 57 kms from Shillong,can be reached by road and generally takes about 1 hrs 30 mins.

  15. Marai Cave:-Located 16 kms from Shillong,is an intriguing cave,called ‘Krem Marai’ (Cave of Marai).Vehicles go up to the base of the hill which is the source of Umiam river.Thereafter, there is a steady climb amidst vegetation, rocks and cultivated land.The hill continues towards, and forms part of,Shillong Peak.
  16. Jowai:-Located 64 kms from Shillong,Jowai is a place surrounded by natural beauty.The majestic hills and the river valleys enhance the beauty making it a nature lover’s favorable retreat.Some the places to visit in Jowai are-Thadlaskein Lake,Umhang Lake,Stone bridge at Thlumuwi,Reliang,Amlarem,New Garampani,Borghat,Nartlang,Syndai,Khliehriat.

Tura:-The second significant hill station after Shillong,The town of Tura  has few tourist spots across the town.Every year many tourists come to view these tourist spots.Places to visit here includes-Tura peak,Nokrek national Park,Rong’bang Falls,Arbella Peak,Pelga Falls,Kata Beel.Located at distance of around 313 kms,generally takes around 6 hours reach by road.

  18. Madina Masjid Shillong:-The first ever glass mosque in India,standing as high as 120 feet and about 60 feet wide, the mosque is the first one to be built using special strengthened glasses in India and the biggest in the north-eastern region.

Meghalaya  is an all-year-round tourist destination,where even the monsoon provides the exhilaration and experience of being on the wettest place on the planet.The temperature in summer,ranges from 15°C to 25°C;in winter,it is much colder, with temperature ranging between 4°C and 16°C.The hills are also often covered by fog during this season.Tourist does not require any kind of permit to visit Meghalaya and the best route to visit Meghalaya is through Guwahati-Shillong Route by road and the view on both sides of the road is exhilarating.
